1.10.16 Meditation: Karin Reinhold, PhD, SUNY Albany Mathematics Professor

It is such fun to introduce you to someone who has been called the “sweetest statistician ever!”    Karin Reinhold, Phd.  is a professor of Mathematics at the State University of Albany, and she is blending her passion for science and spirit as the academic researcher for the Albany Peace Project.
In this lively interview, Dr. Reinhold and I discuss some of the details of the project, and we also try to clear up some misconceptions about this work.

We discuss the 21 Day Challenge, created by internationally known speaker and author Will Bowen, who has inspired over 10,000,000 people to go 21 days in a row without complaining.  The Albany Peace Project sponsored this challenge and purchased 10,000 complaint-free bracelets to distribute to the city of Albany. To learn the details of this transformational program, please watch Will’s short video, which can be found under the meditation. The clip explains how complaining damages our relationships and the five reasons why people complain.  Bracelets are going fast, so if you want any please feel free to reach out using the contact form found below this post.

Programs are held weekly, on Wednesday evenings,  at Unity Church of Albany, 21 King Ave, Albany, NY.

How Do We Love…Well?????    (It may not be what you think)
James Peterson, LCSW-R, Founder True Heart Path
Wednesday January 13 at 7:00 PM
Unity Church of Albany

Have you ever regretted how you ended a relationship wishing you had not taken certain things for granted?
Has someone who means a lot to you ever hurt you deeply by an offhanded comment?
If you were to die tomorrow, would you you be remembered by your deep love for those around you…or something else?

We would be well advised to keep these questions fresh in our mind.  At the end of our lives, we will review our choices, and how well we loved will be the most important questions we ask ourselves.    Unfortunately, these questions are often forgotten as we strive to meet the urgency of life’s daily demands.  But, in this class, James Peterson, LMSW-C, will remind us how important it is that we not only love…. but love well.

What does it mean to love ourselves and others well?

Even more importantly, what keeps us from loving?

James created the True Heart Path Program to help people come back into alignment with what he calls, their “true heart.”  The True Heart is what resides underneath so many of our actions, however it’s expression gets obscured through life’s demands and challenges.  James reminds people of their deepest wisdom as he adeptly guides them back to their greatest teacher, the teacher within of the True Heart.

James guides people to see all of our circumstances as opportunities to release from what no longer serves us and discover true peace within.

See how you can learn to add more power and beauty into your moment to moment existence to help make your life and our world a better place for peace and love to prosper.

Mindfulness For Busy People
Anne-Marie Serre, IT Specialist/Corporate Meditation Leader
Wednesday January 20 at 7:00 PM, Unity Church of Albany

This session will help you apply the transformative power of mindfulness to your busy life, helping you find the coherent calm space within you, as you focus yourself for whatever challenges you face.

Mindfulness is not mystical or magical, it is actually somewhat methodical.  There are basic techniques you can use to broaden your perceptions at any moment, which enables you to resource a much broader palette of elevated feelings, including greater joy, clarity and sustained well-being.

As an IT consultant, Anne-Marie Serre, has had to hone her ability to stay calm under pressure.  In this talk, she will share the best mindfulness techniques she has cherry picked to help us work gracefully under periods of intense stress.  She will discuss how mindfulness techniques do not actually take any “time” at all, because brief periods of mindfulness actually improves focus, energy, efficiency and creativity all which yield greater results in less time.

Programs are held weekly at Unity Church of Albany, 21 King Ave, Albany

1.4.16 Meditation: Bethany Gonyea, Founder, Albany Peace Project

Good Morning,
Kirk Harbinger is always so good at asking great questions.  He has an amazing way of listening for broader themes and integrating information in a unique way.  You will get to hear from Kirk later in the month where he describes how meditation was a turning point for him as an athlete and referee.

In this interview, we briefly discuss how the Albany Peace Project got started, and how it actually helps people hit three key activities that happiness research has revealed greatly enhances happiness levels.

In today’s meditation, I will utilize a lot of light imagery.  You may notice that all of the meditations employ the use of light.  Lynn Mctaggert, author of The Intention Experiment, mentions that intention is “well-ordered light.”   Think of light as a way to highlight where your mind has traveled.  Light also implies understanding to the sub-conscious mind.

I personally love working with light in all my meditations.  To me, light seems to purify thoughts beyond the conscious mind to eliminate emotional static.  There have been times I have even felt a physical jolt when invoking light in my mind’s eye.  I remember hearing somewhere that light is one of the building blocks of the universe.  I believe it, because any meditation that uses light seems to be especially powerful.  Enjoy!!

1.6.16 Meditation: John Welshons, Author

Good Morning,
It is my absolute pleasure to share with you my interview with John Welshons today.  John has been practicing meditation for 47 years and has so much wisdom to show for it.  He shares his honed wisdom in three books that address life’s most challenging questions, Awakening From Grief, When Prayers Aren’t Answered, One Soul, One Love, One Heart.

In this discussion we talk about how meditation helps us see the workings of our minds clearly, which offers us the clarity to discern how we make ourselves miserable through our own thought patterns.  We talk about how one of the first steps out of this personal prison is to learn to become “intolerant of being miserable”.  As John says, we learn by observing the mind through meditation, that suffering is optional.  We really do have many choices throughout the day to choose our thoughts differently and dramatically enhance our well-being.

By staying in command of our mind, and learning to direct it through meditation, as opposed to allowing our minds to run rampant, we soon learn that there is actually “peace underneath” all that mental chatter, and it feels fabulous.

1.13.16 Meditation: John Welshon’s, Author

Good Morning,An interesting thing can happen to us in midlife. We can get lost in the drudgery of life and forget that our lives are the miracle they actually are….We can start to look at all of life as “Been there, done that.”  We narrow the breadth of our experiences to relatively few things, hang out with a decreasing circle of people, listen to the same music, all while a creeping depression starts to move in on us as we wonder “is this is all there is?”    The good news is?   What I have witnessed time and again is that when people start asking this question, that’s when they really start living. In this talk, John Welshons and I talk about the concept of “beginning again”, looking at life with fresh eyes so that we can allow our natural wonder to emerge, and how meditation facilitates our natural awe.  For instance, instead of getting bored with meditating on his breath for 47 years of meditation practice, I remember John once saying that the simple act of becoming aware of his breath has become exquisite!Meditators develop an acute sense of experiencing the world that enables them to engage in life with gusto!  That is why you will see such enthusiastic meditators, and why people start to pursue creative projects after taking up a meditation practice.    During meditation we “metabolize” our lives so that we have greater energy and attention to engage with life off the meditation cushion, which generates amazing creativity and energy to fuel passion in life.  While we cultivate the discipline of this delicate attention, we learn to become more present to appreciate the subtler experiences of life, both the good and the bad, which makes life sweeter overall.John has been practicing meditation for 47 years and has so much wisdom to show for it.  He shares his honed wisdom in three books that address life’s most challenging questions, Awakening From Grief, When Prayers Aren’t Answered, One Soul, One Love, One Heart. To learn more about how John answers tough questions through his books, visit his website:   onesoulonelove.comInterview.

1.7.16 Meditation; James Peterson, LCSW-R, CIC

I am pretty passionate about James Peterson’s topic today….How do we love…well?
It has always seemed tragic to me that so many of us spend time with people we love the most when our energy is at it’s lowest.

We see our family at the end of the day after stress hormones have accumulated in our body.  In the evening, these stress hormones cloud all of our interactions with the ones we love.  It seems to me that the cause of so many relationship challenges are merely mismanaged nervous systems.

Mindfulness and meditation enable us to press the reset button in our bodies at the end of a long day, so the people that mean the most to us, get the better part of us.  By practicing mindfulness, we can remember that each of us are not the same people at the end of the day compared to when we said good-bye to each other in the morning.  Life impacts us through the day, and it behooves all of us to reunite at the end of the day by looking at each other with what I often refer to as “fresh eyes“.  Mindfulness trains us to do that.

James specializes in this ability to see people with “fresh” eyes.  He has honed the art of loving well, and has inspired hundreds of clients to do the same over his 27 years of professional counseling.  Currently, he teaches people who have lost everything due to brain trauma (their health, job, and spouses) to find a genuine exquisite loving place within themselves that enables them to fall in love with themselves and life on a much deeper level.

Ironically, love is the subject of movies, the theme of songs, and eloquently described on greeting cards, but daily demonstrations of love do not get much press.

James will be offering a discussion about loving well and all of it’s challenges,  at Numinous on Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 PM.
