I enjoyed getting to know Saratoga High School’s 9th graded English teacher, Damian Ubriaco. His name was given to me by the mom of one of his students, who told me that Damian had made an impression on her son.
I can see why….because Damian’s class has something very different weaved throughout it that is not included in most ninth grade english classes – mindfulness! Mindfulness is so integral to Damian’s classes that students even practice mindfulness as they walk into Mr. Ubriaco’s classroom each day!!
Another aspect I appreciate regarding Damian’s approach is that he connects the dot between mindfulness and being a contributing citizen of society, which is my underlying passion for implementing the Albany Peace Project. He stresses the importance of living from the heart and how to implement that on a daily basis.
Many of Damian’s insights have stayed with me as I teach mindfulness to teachers and students throughout the area. I am hoping that Damian will inspire more teachers to courageously innovate with this work.
Generally, mindfulness in schools research is revealing that when mindfulness is effectively implemented throughout a school, violence dramatically decreases (often between 45-90%) and grade point averages often increase (between 10-25%).
I think if more teachers engage students in the practical application of mindfulness practices similar to Damian’s approach, students will “own” this work more and dramatically improve their outcome trajectories.
Upcoming NUMINOUS events:
Coherence for a Cause: A Midwinter’s Night Benefit:
Saturday Evening February 4. Doors open from 6-10
To celebrate the 4th Year of the Albany Peace Project, our Peace Project Team has been working diligently for months to bring to you some of the best food and entertainment in the Capital Region! With every ticket purchased, a meal will be donated to a family in need, which is true to not only our mission, but to the larger cause of the evening: Peace. How are we to expect people that suffer from stress, hunger, poverty, and malnourishment to meditate? At the end of the day we must get off our meditation cushions, carry that frequency forward, and help those in need. We at the Albany Peace Project are invested in all of our neighborhoods, and it is our pleasure to showcase several different causes that are imperative to creating a more coherent community!

This will be an introduction to the curriculum of a ten month master class with only ten slots open.

SAVE THE DATE: Funny You Should Say That – Spiritual Comedy Night – with medium, Brandon Russ
Saturday evening March 11, at 6:00.
Shenendehowa Adult Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, NY
Did you ever find spirituality funny?
Have you ever snickered at the ironic situations that emerge as we attempt to skillfully walk between the worlds of Maya and Mystery?
Have you ever stepped back from the latest spiritual book you were reading and say to your self, “What the heck and I reading?”
Or better yet, put a book cover over it?
NUMINOUS invites you to sit back, relax and laugh at the spiritual life with medium and comedian, Brandon Russ. Brandon will give us an entirely different perspective on the latest spiritual book we are reading so that we smile the next time we pick it up to read.
It is well known in shamanic traditions of indigenous healers that only when we can laugh and take ourselves lightly are we capable of any spiritual mastery. It is common for shamans to be “tricksters” and set up clever situations to challenge people to lull themselves out of their dull day dreams and remind themselves of the adventure everyday life really is. So come on out this Saturday evening, and laugh yourself to heightened consciousness…all for the greater good, of course!
More information coming soon….
SAVE THE DATE: Yoga Comedy Night – “I’d rather be in Samadhi”
Saturday evening May 13, at 6:00.
Shenendehowa Adult Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, NY
Have you ever had a yoga wardrobe malfunction exposing a little too much?
Or pretend you don’t see that happening to someone else?
Have you ever felt impossibly inflexible as you see others in what would be considered anywhere else, a “compromising’ pose.
Have you ever gone to a hot yoga class and forgotten the clothes to change into after your shower?
When people start to attend yoga classes, they often want to spontaneously break out in laughter. It is natural. Then, we tend to get used to the language, the ambiance, and the poses, and unfortunately, it is tempting to take it a little too seriously! At this first annual yoga comedy night, we are going to remember why yoga is so funny! We will be inviting several yoga studios to participate! Please reach out if you are interested!
